Smaller, Cooler LEDs for Medical Devices
Link of the day: Laser Technology Breakthrough! A laser like you\'ve never seen before
An ultra-long-lasting LED could prove the solution to problematic lasers
Scientists at the Tyndall National Institute in Ireland have developed smaller, cooler light emitting diodes that they say could be useful in medical devices such as fiber optic probes. Rather than relying on lasers, which give off heat that can negatively affect the areas doctors are trying to study, doctors could turn to these new LEDs.
The miniature light sources also boast incredible endurance. According to CNET, one of the Tyndall researchers involved with the project had one running on his desk for more than two years nonstop; they think a single light could last 80 years with a coin-sized battery running it.
